First, extract this zip file into your Keen 1
directory; please note that files will be overwritten. Then
run the Dangerous Keen.BAT file to play the game.
(Note this mod works only with keen 1v1.31. There are also a few icons for your
entertainment.
IMPORTANT -when you have
finished the red castle level, save your game and run Part2 to see what happens
next. If you find a bonus level run BONUS to play it
properly. (The bonus level will look small unless you’re in bonus
mode.)
The default controls are as follows:
Move left and right: left and right arrows
Jump: Ctrl
Toggle pogo: Alt
Spit a laser: Ctrl + Alt
Toggle sound: F2

On the map world, use the arrow keys to navigate.
Some of these keys can be redefined in the game.
As Commander Keen, you must find all four of
Dangerous Dave’s’ stolen items
In each level you enter, there is an exit to be reached, and four levels
will contain a something of Dave’s also, after completing a level you can
pass it on the world map.
Commander
Keen has previously had many adventures involving Mortimer McMire
(see Episode X or Norp the Yorp games for details.) but things
have been quiet lately.
Currently Keen was talking to his best friend, Dellbert. Delbert was always boasting about how tough his
brother (‘Dangerous’ Dave) was, and today he seemed particularly
exited. “Oh Billy! You won’t believe it! I
was trapped in the haunted mansion! There were ghosts and zombies and
everything and my brother wasted ‘em!
He’s sooo cool!”
“You mean the old ;;
place?” Asked Keen. “That place ain’t so scary, I bet it’s not even haunted. I
could walk through there anytime.”
“Oh yeah?” said Delbert “Well
then why don’t you go get my brothers stuff? He lost his gun, his hat,
his lucky ammo and a tyre was stolen from his car.”
“Okay” said Keen
“I will. See you on the other side.” “Wait!” Yelled Delbert “Take my shotgun!” You’ll
need it!”
Why not? Thought Keen. I
don’t have my raygun handy. As he approached
the looming building only one thought was going through his head…
Little does Keen know that the mansion really IS
haunted! Be on your toes!
Creatures and things |
||
Spiders |
These giant insects muck around the floor pushing Keen around. (They’re not hungry after they ate all the zombie parts Dave left lying around.) One shot to kill. |
|
Slime |
Having similarly gorged themselves of blood and guts, slime just slide around the floor getting in the way. They are impossible to kill their gelatinous bodies absorbing any shots. |
|
Enemies |
|
|
Beasts |
Pretty tough, taking two shots to kill, these guys run around the mansion waiting to tear Keen to pieces. |
|
Zombies |
These guys walk around like the brain dead morons they are, but when they see you will come running. One shot will kill ‘em, but there sure are a lot of ‘em though. |
|
Hunchback drones. |
They’re back and stronger than ever! They throw knives at you so be careful! |
|
Knife |
Shot by the hunchbacks, you can shoot it if you see it coming! |
|
Gore |
This stuff is bad for you; stay away if you see any. |
|
The mansion was once owned by millionaire eccentric
computer programmer Groeten van Frenkel
After going mad after the Commander Keen series ruined
his business, he disappeared leaving behind valuables. Keen could line his
pockets today, so grab all you can find.
Gem:

Crystal ball:

Keens is using Delberts
shotgun, equipped with practically infinite ammo. Keen wasn’t expecting
to use it, but it looks like he’ll have to.
Hazards
Knives: Frenkel
put a few booby traps in his house, watch out for knives.
These are not the only things to watch out for so
be on your guard.
Very
big thanks to all those whose graphics were so perfect that I ripped them, (See
ant familiar tiles?) Remember, forgery is the sincerest praise and your welcome
to rip my graphics anytime!
(Confession;
I ripped so many graphics for this Mod I should call it copyright infringement)
(Or is that taken? Damn!)
Thanks
to Andrew Durdin for
the fantastic programs he's made: Modkeen, KeenEdit, Fin2Bmp, and TileInfo.
Thanks also to Bryan Rodgers (Admiral Bob) for CKPatch,
an excellent tool that helped make my mod what it is.
Finally, thanks to Christian Maas who
wrote the hex editor I used for patching.
Thanks for downloading, now play!
I said, Now play!
Oh; I bet you want some
cheats huh?
All I’ll say is that
if it’s two hard it’s
two hard.
